What is the difference between VPS and Virtual Co-location?- Virtual Co-location emulates a full machine including a hardware layer. The virtual machine simulates enough hardware to allow an unmodified "guest" OS (one designed for the same CPU) to be run in isolation. The "guest" OS environments do not share the same OS as the host system and are virtually unlimited. Applications running in a given "guest" environment operate the same as if the machine where a physical machine. Requires no modification to the guest OS. Optional drivers provide for added functionality.
Virtual Private Servers create isolated virtual partitions or environments(VE), on an existing operating system. VE's virtualize a physical server at the operating system level, enabling multiple isolated virtualized servers to run on a single physical server. The "guest" OS environments share the same OS as the host system - i.e. the same OS kernel is used to implement the "guest" environments. Applications running in a given "guest" environment view it as a stand-alone system. Requires modification to the guest OS.
What benefits do I receive over having my own dedicated collocated server?- Virtual Co-location offers the customer a full co-location service without the usual capital outlay associated with third party hardware and software. By providing customers with a Virtual Machine (VM), the customer can pick and choose their operating system (within reason), have full access to their system, and add and remove applications at their leisure. This provides an exact replica of the dedicated server service with a lower entry cost.
Is Virtual co-location secure?- VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 was designed from the ground up to be a stable and secure virtualization platform. Unlike shared hosting or a virtual private server (VPS) Virtual Servers have their own dedicated operating system and are fully isolated from other virtual machines on the server hardware. As a result, customers no longer have to worry about having their hosted service overrun by another service on the same box. Security from then on is provided by the guest operating system, which can be combined with ICONZ Managed Security Service for a full security solution.
Can I upgrade my solution by purchasing individual components?- Yes, we have designed an Add On package that you may purchase in addition to your virtual co-location. The Add on package includes 512MB of RAM and 10GB of disk space. Please click here to go to our online calculator.
Is there a limit to the number of Add On packages I can purchase?- No, if you feel you need more resource then you may purchase an additional Add on. This includes 512MB of RAM and 10GB of disk space.
Can I select an Add on Package that is a different term from my Virtual co-location?- Yes, You have the option to purchase an Add On package for a term less equal to or less than the contract term you have chosen for your Virtual Co-location. For instance if you choose a 24 month term contract then you may choose an Add on package on a 24, 12 or no term contract. If however you choose a no contract term for your virtual Co-location then you can only select an Add on package with no term.
Is there a set up cost involved with ICONZ virtual co-location?- Set costs for ICONZ Virtual co-location will cost $200.
Am I guaranteed CPU speed?- No, the CPU speed is burstable and not a dedicated service.
Do I receive additional International Data with an Add on package?- Additional International data is not included with an Add on package. This will need to be purchased for $50 per 10GB.
Are backups included with my Virtual Collocated Solution?- No. Back ups are not included with your Virtual co-location. ICONZ strongly recommend you backup your data. ICONZ provide FTP back up starting from $10 for 5GB. Please click here to visit our online calculator to determine your needs.
What additional services are available with an ICONZ Virtual co-location service?- You have the option of adding Monitoring, FTP back up and shared firewall to your Virtual co-location.
Is ICONZ virtual co-location suitable for everyone?- No, a Virtual Co-location solution from ICONZ is not suitable for transactional databases or heavy usage exchange, SQL, or mail applications. Please contact ICONZ if you are unsure if Virtual Co-location is suitable for you.
