What is a Phishing e-mail?

A 'phishing' e-mail is a type of spam message targeted to get a response from the recipient, often requesting sensitive information regarding the person recieving the e-mail. Generally the spammer will send the message from a 'fake' e-mail address which appears to be genuine, in order to fool the e-mail recipient into giving them the information they desire.

For example, a spammer will often e-mail posing as your ISP's Support Team, requesting that you reply to them with your username and password. They can then use these details to gain access to your e-mail account, either to gather personal information about you, or to send more spam to other internet users from your account

What should I do if I receive an e-mail that I think is a phishing scam?

Firstly, always check the spelling and grammar of the email. Spam emails are often filled with spelling and grammar mistakes. Real e-mails from the ICONZ Support Team are not.

Always check the email address that the email came from. Below are some common e-mail addresses used by the ICONZ support team. If the message is not one of the following addresses then it is possible that the message is spam.

  • help@iconz.net
  • dns@iconz.net
  • mac@iconz.net
  • email@iconz.net
  • emailhelp@iconz.net
  • emailsupport@iconz.net
  • outages@iconz.net
  • cst@iconz.net

Remember that ICONZ will NEVER ask you for your username and password via e-mail. If the e-mail contains a request for your username and password, it is almost certainly spam.

Lastly, never reply to an email that you think looks suspicious. If in doubt, e-mail one of the above addresses, or call our support team on 0800 843 638 (option 3)

Letting Us Know

We are always keen to hear about any phishing e-mails which are doing the rounds. If we can locate the source of a message, we can often block it, thus preventing other users from experiencing similar problems.
