FAQ
How is Hosted Exchange better than my current Outlook POP3 mailbox?
POP3 mailboxes do not provide all the functionality of Microsoft Outlook like allowing users to share calendars, contacts and set up meetings. Hosted Exchange eliminates the difficulty of accessing your mailbox from multiple locations with multiple access points as well as continuous synchronisation.
With Hosted Exchange there is less risk of losing your email records as a copy is backed up at ICONZ. Hosted Exchange accounts also provide comprehensive virus management.
What are my options for accessing my Office Online mailbox?
You have the choice of accessing your Hosted Exchange mailbox through:
- Microsoft Outlook - Unlock the full functionality of Microsoft Outlook with Hosted Exchange. Windows XP users using Outlook 2007 can connect directly to the Hosted Exchange service without the need for a VPN using standard HTTP/HTTPS ports. Microsoft Outlook 2007 client is included if required.
- Outlook Web Access 2007 - For users who are travelling or don't have access to Microsoft Outlook, Hosted Exchange includes the use of Microsoft Outlook Web Access 2007. Outlook Web Access (OWA) is a full featured email client, similar to Outlook 2007, and accessible from anywhere in the world via a standard web browser.
- Mobile Synchronisation - Through any Microsoft ActiveSync compatible smartphone or PDA you can wirelessly synchronise your device with Hosted Exchange. A laptop with a 3G Mobile Connect Card will also be able to synchronise. (Please note this feature is only available when Mobile Smartphone Access is purchased).
- Outlook Mobile Access 2007 - Access your inbox, calendar and more from most WAP enabled cell phones and PDAs. Support for HTML, Extensible HTML (XHTML), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) 2.x, and compressed HTML (CHTML) mobile micro browsers.
How secure would our information be if it is stored on ICONZ's servers?
The Hosted Exchange servers are stored in the 24 x 7 monitored ICONZ Datacentre with a 100Mbps bandwidth backbone, climate control, UPS backup power and high level security measures.
Apart from our staff, who can access our email and other files?
Without a username and password your data cannot be accessed. If your usernames and passwords are kept secure, only legitimate users will be able to access your data.
How does Hosted Exchange reduce my hardware, software, and personnel needs?
ICONZ helps with this by:
- Managing all licensing and software upgrades (including virus protection) for each mailbox.
- Managing of all server hardware and administration support for each Hosted Exchange mailbox.
- Providing Hosted Exchange on a per mailbox per month basis.
- Eliminating major upfront costs associated with the setup of an Exchange mail server.
- Maintaining the Hosted Exchange server 24 hours a day with regular backup of data.
Does my domain name need to be with ICONZ for me to use Hosted Exchange?
No, your domain does not need to be located on ICONZ's domain name servers (DNS), but your mail boxes must be hosted with ICONZ. This works by pointing all of the 'MX' (mail) records from wherever the domain is hosted to the mailboxes that are at ICONZ.
Can I store my files online?
Yes, with shared folders you are able to store files (e.g. Word, Excel files) in a central location.
What is Outlook Web Access?
Outlook Web Access (OWA) is a full featured email client, similar to Outlook 2007, and accessible from anywhere in the world via a standard web browser.
Can I access my email when I am overseas?
Yes, you will be able to access your Outlook, with full features through any Internet connection. GPRS is currently available in Vodafone's most popular roaming destinations, including Australia, the UK, Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong and the US - with more countries coming on board all the time. For a regularly updated list of GPRS countries, see Vodafone's website.
Can I use it with a Telecom mobile?
Yes, ICONZ Hosted Exchange is compatible with Telecom Mobile devices - for example, the Harrier
What is GPRS?
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is Vodafone's mobile Internet data network. It does without wires what a traditional Internet connection does with wires. To access your email using a Vodafone mobile device, you will need a GPRS data plan. ICONZ can provide you with a Vodafone GPRS data plan.
How much Vodafone GPRS data will I use?
Work out your data usage on Vodafone's Data Calculator - available here.
My phone seems to stay connected to GPRS. Will this generate cost over time?
GPRS can be 'always on', but you don't pay for time on the network - only for the amount of data that you send and receive. This enables you to be connected all day and only pay for what you use. Thinking and reading time is free.
How fast is GPRS?
GPRS generally operates at speeds between 30-50 KB/s - similar to a landline dial-up connection. All traffic across the GPRS network is optimised; that is, the data for email and web browsing is compressed into packets and "accelerated". This lifts actual performance to between 60-120KB/s, except where data is already heavily compressed or is being sent over a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
What Add-On services can I get with my Hosted Exchange account?
ICONZ offer a range of additional services to provide you the greatest value possible from your Hosted Exchange account. These include:

Does ICONZ support the mobile component of my Hosted Exchange solution?
There are a number of mobile devices that are supported by the Hosted Exchange technology. ICONZ does not offer a configuration service for this and you will be required to consult your device manual. ICONZ has instructions on configuring a number of devices and these are available upon request (and based on availability); however this is beyond the standard provision of the service and therefore is to be carried out at your discretion.
