A few commonly asked questions in regards to our ICONZ Araneo Wireless connections:
Interference: Do Araneo links suffer from interference?
Araneo links are monitored around the clock for attributes including link quality, signal strength, and latency. Every 90 seconds new information enters our system. If link parameters fall below our high standards, one of our staff members is paged, and corrective action is taken immediately to resolve interference or any other potential issues.
Radio Safety: Do Araneo links emit dangerous radiation?
Araneo radios typically broadcast at 60mW, or about one tenth of the power of a cellular phone. By using powerful antennas we are able to concentrate this energy directly towards other access nodes. Standing in front of an Araneo link is perfectly safe, but will interrupt service!
Antennas: How large are Araneo antennas?
Araneo use a range of antennas to provide service, from A4-sized panels up through 90cm parabolic dishes. Rest assured that in most cases an Araneo installation will be less obtrusive than a typical Sky satellite receiver.
Link Speeds: What are the lowest and highest capacity links Araneo provides?
In a multi-tenanted residential building, Araneo can provide home-use circuits as low as 256kbps. Using our standard equipment, installed at every node on the Araneo network, up to 20mbps can be provided. Using special equipment, areas within a kilometre of fibre-connected Araneo nodes can enjoy service at up to 1000mbps.
Service for Buildings: Can Araneo provide service for entire buildings?
Araneo currently provides service for several multi-tenanted buildings, including academic halls of residence and office buildings. Only one Araneo server and antenna set is required per building, and install costs can be much lower when service is shared.
Licensed Links: Can you provide licensed links?
Yes! Araneo can provide links in licensed spectrum. Using our standard software-based radios we can provide short and medium distance links in the 3.7-4.4 GHz frequency range, and long distance (>30k) links in the 4.9 GHz frequency range.

Using a fixed wireless technology to supply Internet connections no less than 256kbps in speed, the ICONZ Extend Wireless Network is available in many regions outside of New Zealand’s main city centers.
Designed to provide high quality wireless broadband access to rural and provincial New Zealand, ICONZ Extend Wireless is ideal for delivering reliable service to widely dispersed populations.
ICONZ Extend is transmitted over licensed radio spectrum, engineered to provide the highest levels of security and availability. The network is generally not susceptible to radio or electrical interference, including the effects of adverse weather.
AS4020 base stations have been installed at strategic locations around New Zealand to provide the best possible service. Each base station can deliver high speed Internet to end users that may be more than 50km away.

ICONZ Extend Wireless Hardware & Installation
- Hardware Fee: $1000 (ex-GST) this includes the Kordia Extend antenna or outdoor unit and service termination unit.
- Installation Fee: $400 (ex-GST) this price is indicative only and subject to change if installation is required within 10 working days, or distance from nearest main centre is greater than 10km.
What equipment do I need?
It takes two small pieces of equipment to run broadband wireless services on Extend:
- an antenna fixed to the outside of the building
- and a small unit near the computer
These need to be installed by an approved installer.
What are the options with WiFi?
Wi-Fi provides the ability to provide wireless LAN capability meaning there is no need to rewire to receive Extend throughout your home or office. Wi-Fi also provides the ability to provide roaming within the Wi-Fi coverage area or to extend the service to outlying buildings or hard to reach locations.
