Maximum Speed ADSL Explained
Maximum speed ADSL may introduce more variability in the speed that can be achieved. Some customers may experience an increase; others may not notice much difference and some may experience a decrease in line speeds. The speed you are capable of achieving is dependent on a number of factors such as your distance from the Telecom exchange, number of users, the time of day and the type of modem you use. ICONZ ADSL Frequently asked questions
What is ICONZ ADSL?
ICONZ ADSL (Digital Subscriber Line) allows your standard phone line to be used for a high speed internet connection, and enables you to talk on the phone and surf the internet simultaneously.
How does ICONZ ADSL work?
Standard phone lines can only carry a limited range of signal frequencies that correspond to those heard in normal human speech. Dial-up modems use this range for sending and receiving data therefore are limited in their speed.
ADSL on the other hand transmits data at a higher frequency and across a wider range than those used for speech so faster data speeds can be achieved. In order to take advantage of this, a DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer) needs to be installed in the telephone exchange nearest your home or business, and Telecom must connect your phone line to it.
An advantage of this is that normal voice frequencies are not affected by the ADSL signal, so your internet connection and phone connection can be used simultaneously.
What is a Telecom Churn Fee?
A Telecom Churn Fee is charged to ICONZ when a user changes from another provider to an ICONZ ADSL account, and is $36.25 + GST. A Telecom Churn Fee is not charged when the customer is a new connection. This is currently waived during our free connection and modem offer period.
How do I find out if ICONZ ADSL is available where I am?
The ICONZ ADSL service is available to selected ADSL enabled exchanges, and is subject to a Telecom line test to determine the line suitability and the minimum distance required to the nearest exchange. Perform an availability check here...
What hardware is required?
An ADSL modem or router is required to provide a connection to the Telecom network. ADSL Splitters are required to separate the voice and data streams coming over your phone line. A splitter needs to be installed for each jackpoint you plug a telephone into.
What are the connection options available to me?
You can choose between two options; connection only or connection and wiring.

How much will I have to pay if I exceed my monthly data allocation?
Extra data usage on ICONZ ADSL Broadband will be charged at half cent per MB. (i.e. 1GB = $5.76) Data includes national and international email & internet traffic
What speeds can I expect from my ICONZ ADSL connection?
Depending on which plan you are on, customers will receive either a 2Mbps or 3.5Mbps download speed. These speeds are burstable, so we cannot guarantee these speeds will be reached 100% of the time. Upload speeds will range from 128Kbps to 512Kbps again dependant on the plan chosen.
Can I get a Static IP address?
Yes, a Static IP will cost $5.00 + GST per month.
What happens if I move to a new address?
Sadly due to restrictions with Telecom we are unable to processes a move of your ICONZ ADSL connection from one line to another or one location to another.
As a result you will need to reapply for ICONZ ADSL once your new phone line has been installed and completed within the Telecom system.
This will result in a new connection charge:

Please include your new phone line number, Telco account number and account name along with the new address as with your Telco provider. A 5-7 working day reconnection time frame does apply for this.
What is interleaving?
When sending data along an ADSL line the data is sent in bursts. Occasionally these bursts overlap other bursts, which cause a small loss of data. Interleaving is a process designed to prevent data errors when sending information from one place to another.
With interleaving switched on the data is split into smaller segments, so when these bursts overlap less data is lost. However sending data with interleaving on causes a slight delay.
If you choose to switch off interleaving the overall speed of your connection will not improve.
If you are not using the internet for online gaming or applications that require low latency (the time taken for data to travel from source to destination) then we would strongly recommend that you select 'Interleaving on' when completing your ADSL application
Can I have interleaving switched off on my connection?
Yes, you can have interleaving switched off. This is primarily sought by gamers who wish to achieve better ping times. Please be aware that this is not suitable for all games. This option is only available on the maximum speed plans and is not available on the ADSL 1 2MB/128 Kbps plan.

ADSL Broadband Terms and Conditions
- ICONZ reserves the right to amend these Terms and Conditions at any time without prior notification. In the case of such a change, ICONZ will give notice to all New ADSL Broadband customers.
- Megabyte usage is based on the amount of data transferred through your ICONZ ADSL Broadband connection (both uploading and downloading) this is charged at half cent per megabyte above and beyond your allocated monthly plan usage.
Free Modem & Connection Offer - Terms and Conditions
- Free modem and connection offer is available until 31/12/2010 and includes the Dynalink RTA1320E 1 Port Wired Router and standard ADSL connection only. A wiring charge may apply in some instances, for example if you have a monitored alarm or more than five jack-points in use.
- A 12 month minimum term and $149 early termination fee apply.
- Offer available to new ICONZ ADSL broadband customers only.
- ICONZ ADSL Broadband is not available in all areas and broadband speeds do vary depending on distance from your local exchange, your computer's capability, modem connection and wiring. Therefore speeds are a best efforts service of those indicated.
