ADSL Broadband Frequently Asked Questions
How does ADSL Broadband work?
Standard phone lines can only carry a limited range of signal frequencies that correspond to those heard in normal human speech. Dial-up modems use this range for sending and receiving data therefore are limited in their speed.
ADSL Broadband on the other hand transmits data at a higher frequency and across a wider range than those used for speech so faster data speeds can be achieved. In order to take advantage of this, a DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer) needs to be installed in the telephone exchange nearest your home or business, and Telecom must connect your phone line to it.
An advantage of this is that normal voice frequencies are not affected by the ADSL signal, so your internet connection and phone connection can be used simultaneously.
If you choose Naked ADSL Broadband the service is delivered over the same physical copper phone lines, however you do not have an active landline phone service. This also means you will not have a separate bill for your landline phone service and will save on average $45 per month.
How do I find out if ADSL Broadband is available where I am?
The ADSL Broadband service is available to selected ADSL enabled exchanges, and is subject to a line test to determine the line suitability and the minimum distance required to the nearest exchange. Please email support@iconz.net to see if our services are available at your address
What hardware is required?
An ADSL modem or router is required to provide an ADSL Broadband connection. ADSL filters are required to separate the voice and data streams coming over your phone line. A filter needs to be installed for each jackpoint you use.
What are the connection options available to me?
You can choose between three options; connection only, connection & wiring and transfer.
| OPTION | DESCRIPTION |
|---|---|
|
Connection Only |
|
|
Connection and Wiring |

How much will I have to pay if I exceed my monthly data allocation?
Extra data usage on ICONZ BROADBAND will be charged at (0.0033c/MB - i.e. $3.42/GB for plans up to 40GB. For plans 60GB and above extra data usage will be charged at (0.0022c/MB - i.e. $2.24/GB). Data includes national and international email and internet traffic. All pricing includes GST.
What speeds can I expect from my ADSL Broadband connection?
All ADSL Broadband plans are Maximum download and upload speed (commonly referred to as Max/Max or Full Speed). Maximum speed ADSL may introduce more variability in the speed that can be achieved. The speed you are capable of achieving is dependent on a number of factors such as your distance from your local exchange, number of users, the time of day and the type of modem you use.
How do I change from Clothed Broadband to Naked Broadband?
Simply call your current phone line provider and ask them to cancel your phone line BUT retain the broadband. ICONZ will receive notice from our supplier that this change has taken place. Once your connection has been changed to naked broadband, new monthly fees will apply. These can be viewed by clicking on the naked broadband options in the product table above. ICONZ will apply the new charges from the date your phone line is cancelled.
Can I get a Static IP address?
Yes, a Static IP will cost $5.75 including GST per month.
What happens if I move to a new address?
You will need to complete our ADSL Broadband Move Address form
If you require a Connection & Wiring at your new address, this will cost $167.00 including GST. If not, a move address is free.
What is interleaving?
When sending data along an ADSL line the data is sent in bursts. Occasionally these bursts overlap other bursts, which cause a small loss of data. Interleaving is a process designed to prevent data errors when sending information from one place to another.
With interleaving switched on the data is split into smaller segments, so when these bursts overlap less data is lost. However sending data with interleaving on causes a slight delay.
If you choose to switch off interleaving the overall speed of your connection will not improve.
If you are not using the internet for online gaming or applications that require low latency (the time taken for data to travel from source to destination) then we would recommend that you select 'Interleaving on'. All ADSL Broadband connections are setup with ‘Interleaving on’ as default.
Can I have interleaving switched off on my connection?
Yes, you can have interleaving switched off. This is primarily sought by gamers who wish to achieve better ping times. Please be aware that this is not suitable for all games. This option is only available on the maximum speed plans and is not available on the ADSL 1 256Kbps/128 Kbps plan.
If you are a current ADSL Broadband customer and wish to have interleaving switched off please complete the following plan change form
If you are looking to sign up for ADSL Broadband and wish to have interleaving switched off please add "switch off interleaving" in the comments field of our sign up form
