Data sovereignty: the MANY risks AND PERILS of assumption

An IRD alert to New Zealand businesses warning that "only records stored in New Zealand-based data centres comply with record-keeping obligations" highlights some lax attitudes towards cloud vendors. Now then, before you step on the boat and head offshore for cloud computing services, take a careful look.

When new technology trends arrive, as it did with Cloud Computing in 2008, the airwave chatter is awash with commentary and before you know it, everyone rushes to claim their “market leading” position. Just like Harvey Normans or Farmers BIGGEST EVER sale, we buy the latest and greatest, hook line and sinker, every time! What strange people we are.

The Future of Cloud Computing, what say you?

With time on my hands over the weekend (a rare thing with teenage boys) I very strangely found myself pondering the future of cloud computing. Now before I recieve your mocking tones, I was actually preparing for an article I had been asked to write by a local print publication of some repute so I needed to put my foot down and come up with the goods. Free time was at hand so........I started pondering.  Here were/are my thoughts.

In this article and many others that will follow I will present opinion on issues that relate both to our company, ICONZ and the hosting industry in general. Not being an uber-technologist or an accountant I have a reasonable grasp on reality and simple speak so you can expect to see good old straight forward talking from yours truly.
